School Governor Vacancies

Welcome to the School Governor Recruitment page of our website.

School Governors are the largest volunteer group in the UK. There are more than 300,000 across the UK and we are fortunate enough to have over 130 of those working with Kernow Learning schools. Governors come from all backgrounds, bringing and range of skills and perspectives. You don't have to work in education to be a Governor.

Our Local Governing Bodies are made up of the Headteacher of the school, 2 parent Governors, 1 staff Governor and at least 3 community Governors (in our church schools we also have foundation Governors). We are always looking for parents, community and foundation Governors and would be interested in hearing from anybody that would like to volunteer in this capacity.

Our Local Governing Bodies are committees of our Trust board and have the following responsibilities delegated to them:

  • Setting the strategic direction and vision of the school.
  • Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.
  • Ensuring the voices of school stakeholders are heard.

Some of the things our current Governors say:

Benefits of becoming a Governor

Governing within a school provides an opportunity for your own personal development. We hugely value our local Governors and there are open lines of communication within our Governance structure. We have a full induction and an annual training offer for all Governors to support them in being able to undertake the role. Governors are "critical friends" supporting our schools but also challenging and holding to account. They make a huge difference to the future of children and young people within your community.

What time commitment is required?

  • Attend and participate in Governing Body meetings (we currently have 3 per year).
  • Undertake monitoring in school to triangulate information you are given with what is visible on the ground.
  • Attend training to support your development.
  • Where a Governor has a particular link role such as safeguarding or SEND, we have additional network groups so that best practice can be shared across all our schools (these are termly).
