At Trevisker we believe every child is an artist. We empower children to believe they themselves are artists by equipping every child with the knowledge, skills and techniques to apply whatever they can imagine. We strive to expose our children to a wide range of art produced by artists from a variety of different cultures, points in time, gender and ethnicity; as well as style and medium. We believe the art and artists studied at Trevisker will have a positive impact on our children and inspire and influence their own, unique style. We strive to inspire children to explore their style through a variety of medium and record their own experiences through creative work. In addition, we plan to empower our children with the confidence and knowledge to evaluate & analyse their own work, as well as that of their peers and famous artists through the sketch book approach.

At Trevisker, we adopt an approach of supporting our children to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world using IT. Children are supported to understand the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems, and a range of content. Computing also ensures that children become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

 

At Trevisker we deliver an inspiring, rigorous and practical Design and Technology curriculum. Through creativity and imagination, pupils design and create items that solve problems in the real world.

Design and Technology enables children to draw on their maths, science, engineering, computing and art skills. It supports a wider progressive curriculum allowing the drawing and modelling of ideas. Children will be encouraged to select appropriate tools and techniques for making products and following safe procedures.

Risk-taking is an integral to DT and once learnt, children become resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through evaluation of real past and present Design and Technology, pupils become critical thinkers and see the purpose of design for the real world. We believe this world needs adults with these skills and traits: to design and think up engineering feats such as new, carbon free energy sources or synthetic fuel, fit for air travel.

Without a creative, imaginative education, we would not produce creative, innovative adults to become ground breaking engineers, architects, technicians, inventors and designers. Throughout this curriculum children will be encouraged to select appropriate tools and techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures.

 

At the Trevisker Primary School, we use the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics programme designed by Ruth Miskin to teach early reading. The structured programme helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. At the core of the programme is the lively and vigorous teaching of synthetic phonics. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to sound-blend words for reading (decoding) at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling (encoding).

We have found that by using the Read Write Inc. programme, children experience success from the very beginning of their reading journey. Lively phonic books are then closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and as children re-read stories their fluency increases. The stories include prompts to support thinking out loud and discussions, helping children develop the skills they need to be successful storytellers.

Read Write Inc. lessons are fun and engaging and all staff who deliver the reading sessions are fully trained. The lessons are taught daily and pupils are regularly assessed and grouped to enable appropriate challenge and pace throughout the programme.

Our knowledge rich curriculum aims to develop children’s understanding of substantive concepts whilst expanding their historical enquiry skills and making connections between what has happened before and their own identity in the present day.

At Trevisker, we believe that the learning of a Modern Foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our pupils. It helps them to develop communication skills, including key skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as extending the children’s knowledge of how languages work. The linguistic skills gained also assist and lay foundations for further language learning. Studying another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others.

“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity” (NC) The intent of our music curriculum is to provide all children at our school with a broad foundation in the musical elements, equipping our pupils to explore their own musicianship, appreciate music which is played and performed by others, and collaborate in creating their own music. A strong foundation in musical skills and knowledge will allow children musical expression to flourish, enabling them to enjoy a full experience of all that music has to offer. In addition to this, we aim to provide children with experiences beyond the classroom, such as instrumental lessons and performance opportunities in the local community.

The curriculum is engaging and inspiring, allowing pupils to develop a love of music through listening and responding to a wide range of music (genres, historical periods, traditions etc). Throughout the curriculum they will learn to sing and compose music with an understanding of how music is created, produced and communicated - with performance at the heart of this. Our belief is that music at Trevisker should encourage increased selfconfidence, creativity, and a sense of achievement. During their time at Trevisker, we want all our children to be able to enjoy and benefit from all these aspects of music, as part of a wider curriculum that celebrates creativity in all its forms. We recognise the therapeutic and mental and emotional health benefits of music, and as such the importance of musical opportunities in supporting children’s well-being and capacity to engage with every aspect of their school life.

 

Kernow Learning Trust is keen to address the negative stereotype of PE being all about prowess in sport and rather reposition it to enhance lifelong skills.

PE in Kernow Learning schools is all about developing physical literacy and a love of movement at primary level, with a focus on leadership skills and health and wellbeing. This puts Physical Education at the heart of our educational agenda– ensuring young people are well enough to learn and have developed a range of personal competencies that will help them in the classroom and beyond. 

 

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Policy and Information

As part of your child’s educational experience at Trevisker Primary School, we aim to promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education that gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is a fundamental part of our approach to support pupils to grow into confident, caring and respectful young citizens.

As stated in the draft Policy, the school is well aware that the primary role in children’s RSE lies with parents and carers and that is why we invited parents to shape our curriculum through the parent questionnaire. We have taken your comments on board confirming you have read it (link below) and asking for you to complete the Consultation Survey (link below) and raise any questions or comments there. We wish to build a positive and supporting relationship with the parents of children at our school through mutual understanding, trust and co-operation. If you have any questions about what your child is learning, you are encouraged to contact your child’s class teacher or the PSHE co-ordinator.

Our whole school motto is, ‘Friendship and respect Learn for Life.’ Religious Education is a key subject which fits readily with this ethos. At Trevisker children learn about the major religions and philosophies and are encouraged to develop an understanding of important religious and moral issues. Learning activities fully encompass the needs of all learners.

Pupils are encouraged to ask questions and to develop a wide range of skills including, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and reflection. We provide the opportunity to understand and deepen children’s knowledge of the impact of religion and beliefs on the world. By learning about global religious and non-religious beliefs children will appreciate the beliefs and values of a diverse world and make informed choices which will enable them to develop their own beliefs.

At Trevisker we adopt an approach of supporting our children to become “Young Scientists.” Children are supported to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Furthermore, we wish for them, at Trevisker, to develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Children must be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
